Friendly URL Checker - results and guide
What the Friendly URL Checker checks
- HTTPS and total length
- Capital letters, underscores, spaces and encoded characters
- Folder depth, double slashes and stray separators
- Query parameters, session IDs and tracking parameters
- Numeric or hash-like segments in place of words
- Slug length, filler words and visible file extensions
- Whether the URL loads, redirects or returns an error
What is an SEO friendly URL?
A friendly URL tells a person what is on the page before they open it. Compare /blog/reduce-website-downtime with /index.php?id=4821&cat=7. The first can be read, remembered and shared. The second says nothing.
Google's own guidance is simple: use words people understand, separate them with hyphens, keep URLs short, and avoid long ID numbers and unnecessary parameters. A good URL is a small ranking signal, and a larger usability one, since the address is shown in results and in every shared link.
Rules for a clean URL
Use lowercase letters throughout, because paths are case-sensitive on most servers and mixed case creates duplicates. Use hyphens, not underscores: Google treats a hyphen as a space between words and an underscore as a joiner. Keep the slug to a few words that name the topic, and drop filler such as "the" and "and".
Keep the structure shallow, and never put session IDs in the address. If you change an existing URL, add a 301 redirect from the old address and confirm it with the Redirect Checker. A well-ranked page should not be renamed just to tidy its URL: the gain is small and the move carries risk.
How to use the Friendly URL Checker
- Enter the address of the page you want to check. You can leave out
https://. - Optionally add the keyword you want the page to rank for.
- Press Check URL. The page is fetched from our servers, the way a search engine crawler would fetch it.
- Read the findings from top to bottom: problems first, then warnings. Each one says what to change.
Common problems and how to fix them
The URL is full of parameters
Enable clean permalinks or URL rewriting in your platform so pages get path-based addresses. Keep parameters for sorting and filtering, and add a canonical tag.
Mixed-case URLs
Generate lowercase slugs and redirect any uppercase request to the lowercase version with a 301.
Slugs are a copy of the full headline
Edit the slug before publishing. Three to five words are enough: /pricing-plans, not /our-new-and-improved-pricing-plans-for-2026.
