Heading Tags Checker - results and guide
What the Heading Tags Checker checks
- How many H1, H2, H3 and lower headings the page has
- A missing H1, several H1s, or an H1 that is empty, very short or very long
- Whether the first heading on the page is the H1
- Skipped levels, such as an H2 followed directly by an H4
- Empty headings and headings with identical text
- Long pages with no H2 subheadings
- The complete outline in document order
What are heading tags?
Heading tags, <h1> to <h6>, mark the titles and subtitles inside a page. The H1 names the page, H2s divide it into sections, and H3s to H6s divide those sections further. Together they form an outline, much like the table of contents of a document.
People scan headings to find the part they need. Screen reader users jump between them to navigate. Search engines read them to understand how the content is organised and which passage answers which question.
How to structure headings for SEO
Use one H1 that says what the page is about, close in meaning to the title tag. Use H2s for the main sections and go down one level at a time: an H3 belongs under an H2, not straight under the H1. Choose levels by structure, never by how large the text looks. Size is a job for CSS.
Write headings that describe the section below them. A reader should be able to understand the page from the headings alone. If you are checking a whole page, the On-Page SEO Checker includes these checks along with the title, content and links.
How to use the Heading Tags Checker
- Enter the address of the page you want to check. You can leave out
https://. - Optionally add the keyword you want the page to rank for.
- Press Check headings. The page is fetched from our servers, the way a search engine crawler would fetch it.
- Read the findings from top to bottom: problems first, then warnings. Each one says what to change.
Common problems and how to fix them
The page has no H1
The main heading is probably an image, or text styled to look like a heading. Wrap the visible page title in an h1 element.
There are several H1s
Themes often put the site name or logo in an H1 on every page. Change that to a plain div or p and keep the H1 for the page's own title.
Levels are skipped
Headings were picked for their size. Replace them with the correct level and adjust the appearance in the stylesheet.
