Title Tag Checker - results and guide

What the Title Tag Checker checks

  • Whether a title tag exists, is empty or appears more than once
  • Length in characters and estimated pixel width against Google's display limit
  • Placeholder titles such as Home or Untitled, and titles written in capitals
  • Words repeated often enough to look like keyword stuffing
  • Whether the title sits inside the head of the document
  • Optional: position of your target keyword in the title
  • A preview of the search result as Google would show it

What is a title tag?

The title tag is the <title> element in the <head> of a page. Browsers show it in the tab, and search engines use it as the clickable headline of a result. It is the strongest single on-page statement of what a page is about, and the first thing a searcher reads.

Google does not count characters when it displays a title: it cuts by width, at roughly 580 to 600 pixels on desktop. A title full of wide letters such as W and M runs out of room sooner than one with narrow letters. That is why this tool reports pixels as well as characters.

How long should a title tag be?

Titles of 30 to 60 characters usually fit and still say enough. Put the topic first and the brand last, because the end is what gets cut. Each page needs its own title: identical titles across a site make it hard for search engines to tell pages apart.

Google rewrites titles it considers unhelpful, too long, stuffed with keywords or unrelated to the page. A clear, accurate title is the best protection. Check the full snippet with the Google Search Preview, and the text under it with the Meta Description Checker.

How to use the Title Tag Checker

  1. Enter the address of the page you want to check. You can leave out https://.
  2. Optionally add the keyword you want the page to rank for.
  3. Press Check title. The page is fetched from our servers, the way a search engine crawler would fetch it.
  4. Read the findings from top to bottom: problems first, then warnings. Each one says what to change.

Common problems and how to fix them

The title is cut off in results

Shorten it to under 60 characters and move the important words to the front. Drop filler such as "Welcome to" and keep the brand name to one mention at the end.

The page has two title tags

A theme and an SEO plugin are often both printing one. Disable the title output in one of them. Inline SVG can also contain its own title element, which this tool ignores.

Google shows a different title

Google replaces titles that are very long, repeat words or do not match the visible content. Make the title describe the page and agree with the main heading.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ideal title tag length?
Aim for 30 to 60 characters, or under about 580 pixels wide. That is long enough to describe the page and short enough to display in full on desktop results.
Is the title tag the same as the H1?
No. The title tag appears in the browser tab and in search results. The H1 is the visible heading on the page. They can match, but they are separate elements with separate jobs.
Do title tags affect rankings?
Yes. The title is a confirmed, if modest, ranking signal, and it strongly influences whether people click your result, which matters just as much.
Why does the tool show pixel width?
Search results truncate titles by rendered width, not by character count. Two titles with the same number of characters can take up different amounts of space.
