Open Graph Checker - results and guide

What the Open Graph Checker checks

  • og:title, og:description, og:type, og:url and og:site_name
  • og:image: an absolute HTTPS URL that loads and is really an image
  • Image dimensions against the 1200 x 630 recommendation, shape and file size
  • Declared og:image:width and height compared with the real file
  • twitter:card and the other Twitter tags
  • Duplicate tags and an og:url that points somewhere else
  • A preview of the link card with your title, text and image

What are Open Graph tags?

Open Graph is a set of meta tags that tell social networks and messaging apps how to present a link. When someone pastes your URL into Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord or iMessage, the app fetches the page and reads og:title, og:description and og:image to build a card. Without them it guesses, and often shows a bare link or the wrong picture.

X (Twitter) reads its own twitter:card tag to choose the layout and falls back to the Open Graph tags for the content.

What makes a good share image?

Use an image of 1200 x 630 pixels, a ratio of 1.91 to 1, saved as JPEG or PNG and ideally under 1 MB. Give its full address starting with https://: social crawlers do not resolve relative paths. Declaring og:image:width and og:image:height lets a platform draw the large card on the very first share.

Open Graph tags do not influence search rankings. They decide how your link looks where people share it, which decides whether it gets clicked. For the search result itself, see the Google Search Preview.

How to use the Open Graph Checker

  1. Enter the address of the page you want to check. You can leave out https://.
  2. Press Check tags. The page is fetched from our servers, the way a search engine crawler would fetch it.
  3. Read the findings from top to bottom: problems first, then warnings. Each one says what to change.

Common problems and how to fix them

The card shows no image

Check that og:image is an absolute HTTPS URL, returns status 200 without a login, and is at least 200 x 200 pixels. SVG files are not supported by the large platforms.

An old image or title keeps appearing

Platforms cache link previews. After fixing the tags, refresh the cache with Facebook's Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn's Post Inspector.

The image is cropped badly

Keep important content away from the edges and use the 1.91 to 1 shape. Square images are cropped or shown as a small thumbnail.

Frequently asked questions

Which Open Graph tags are required?
The protocol asks for og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. In practice og:description matters too, since most platforms show it under the title.
What size should og:image be?
1200 x 630 pixels. The minimum for a large preview on Facebook is 600 x 315, and anything under 200 x 200 is rejected.
Do Open Graph tags help SEO?
Not directly. Search engines do not rank pages by them. They make shared links more attractive, which brings visits and sometimes links.
Do I need Twitter Card tags as well?
Add twitter:card with the value summary_large_image. X uses your Open Graph title, description and image for the rest.
