Google Search Preview - results and guide

What the Google Search Preview checks

  • The title and meta description the page currently has
  • How each is truncated on desktop and on mobile, by pixel width
  • The site name and breadcrumb Google shows above the title
  • The snippet Google is likely to build when there is no description
  • Noindex and nosnippet directives that would hide the result
  • Live editing: type a new title or description and watch the preview change

What does a search preview show?

A search result has three parts you control: the title link, the description snippet and the address line above them. Google builds them from your title tag, your meta description and your URL, then trims each to the space available. On desktop a title has about 580 pixels and a description about 920; on phones the description gets roughly 680.

This preview fetches your page, reads those tags and draws the result with the same limits, so you can see what fits before you publish.

How to write a result people click

Lead with the topic, since the end of a long title is what disappears. Say what the reader gets, and keep the brand to the end. In the description, answer the question behind the search and finish the thought within about 120 characters so it reads well on mobile.

Remember that Google decides the final wording for each search. It keeps your text when it describes the page well and matches the query. Check the pieces in detail with the Title Tag Checker and the Meta Description Checker.

How to use the Google Search Preview

  1. Enter the address of the page you want to check. You can leave out https://.
  2. Press Preview. The page is fetched from our servers, the way a search engine crawler would fetch it.
  3. Read the findings from top to bottom: problems first, then warnings. Each one says what to change.

Common problems and how to fix them

The preview shows the domain instead of a title

The page has no title tag, or it is empty. Add a title of 30 to 60 characters to the head of the page.

The description in the preview is page text

There is no meta description, so the first sentences of the page are used, as Google would do. Add a description to control the snippet.

My live result looks different

Google rewrites titles and snippets per query and may show dates, ratings or sitelinks from structured data. The preview shows what your tags request, not a guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the Google search preview?
It uses the pixel limits Google applies on desktop and mobile, so truncation is close to what you will see. Google can still choose different text for a particular search.
Can I preview a page that is not published yet?
Yes. Run the tool on any URL, then type your planned title and description into the fields. The preview updates as you type.
Why is my title cut even though it is under 60 characters?
Titles are cut by width. Capital letters and wide characters take more room, so a 58-character title can still be too wide.
Does the preview show rich results?
No. Stars, FAQs and other rich results depend on structured data and on Google's own decisions. The preview covers the standard title, address and description.
