Web Page Size Checker - results and guide
What the Web Page Size Checker checks
- Size of the HTML document, raw and as transferred
- Estimated total page weight, from the size of each file
- Number of requests, by type: CSS, JavaScript, images and fonts
- The 15 largest files
- Whether the HTML is compressed
- Inline CSS and JavaScript, and the number of HTML elements
What is page size?
Page size, or page weight, is the number of bytes a browser has to download to show a page: the HTML document plus its stylesheets, scripts, images and fonts. The median web page today is a little over 2 MB, and images and JavaScript account for most of it.
Weight is not the same as speed, but the two are closely tied. Every byte takes time on a slow connection, and every script has to be parsed and run after it arrives. A phone on a weak signal feels the difference between 1 MB and 4 MB as seconds.
How big should a page be?
There is no fixed limit. As working targets: keep the HTML document under about 150 KB, the whole page under 1.5 MB, and the request count under 50. Google reads only the first 15 MB of an HTML file, which matters only for extreme cases, but a large document slows parsing long before that.
This tool measures the files referenced in the HTML. Files requested later by JavaScript, background images set in CSS and fonts loaded from stylesheets are not included, so a browser's network panel will show a somewhat higher total. Images are usually the easiest saving: see the Responsive Image Checker and the Lazy Loading Images Checker.
How to use the Web Page Size Checker
- Enter the address of the page you want to check. You can leave out
https://. - Press Measure page. The page is fetched from our servers, the way a search engine crawler would fetch it.

Common problems and how to fix them
Images dominate the page weight
Resize images to the size they are displayed at, convert them to WebP or AVIF, and lazy-load those below the first screen.
Too many JavaScript files
Remove unused libraries and plugins, bundle what remains, and load third-party tags only on the pages that need them.
The HTML document is very large
Look for inlined JSON data, base64 images, giant navigation menus and long lists. Paginate lists and move data to separate requests.
